What is Magic?

What is Magic?

Asking the dictionary, magic is:

”The power of apparently influencing the course of events by using mysterious or supernatural forces.”

But what are these mysterious forces?

Well, let’s start with force. We might consider force as a type of energy. And, it is with energy that we move things.

Magic is manipulating or shifting energy towards a desired outcome.

This is what the Magician card represents.

In this card, magic is channeled from the divine and given form.

One thing that sets apart occult practices from religion is the idea that we can directly connect to powerful forces without an intermediary like a priest. We can invoke the divine directly.

So, how do I invoke the divine and call in magic?

This varies depending on the belief system or what you’re comfortable with. You might use prayer, spells, incantations, visualization, or meditation to call in energies needed to achieve your goal.

My current approach to magic is to see myself and life as a living spell – I work with the flow of energy as an active participant, to study it, shift it, and see how it’s working in and around me.

Scientists are theorizing that consciousness itself creates the universe. This is what Magicians have known for a long time: the universe begins inside of us. Our cells mirror the stars. We are a reflection of the cosmos.

Turning to Tarot for Magic

Here’s a method for working with tarot magic that I like.

Intentionally choose a card whose energy you want to invoke.

1. In meditation, enter the card. What happens when you step into the landscape?
2. What happens when you become the figure, or you observe the symbols on the card?
3. What smells or sounds greet you?
4. Where are things leading? What do things look like as you progress through this card, as you see this energy unfolding in your life?
5. Are there more questions you’d like to ask? While entering your card, you can also take time to ask for more information.
6. To bring the magic of the card into your life, feel yourself embodying the energy of the card.
7. Close the meditation by giving thanks for the information. Note your findings, as you can refer back when needed.

Magic is a powerful force, and with the cards, we always have access to it.
