When I make art, it feels like I’m leaving my body. The door to a mysterious realm opens up, and I enter. Time and space don’t exist here.
Ideas are conscious, living entities that influence my work, and I surrender control to their unfolding. The resonance we share becomes embodied in works that explore nature and the celestial. Figures manifest the essence of these worlds.
Sometimes the unexplained appears in my vision before I start a painting. A figure appears before a black hole, and I can’t tell if they are disintegrating or gathering power as they get closer to the hole. I hope viewers feel the thrill of mystery and the curiosity of these encounters.
The celestial and natural world are inhabited by spirits and memory. Water is one example. Consider one single droplet of water. How many bodies has that water been in? How many riverbeds? How many eons has it seen? I invite viewers to contemplate the endless stories held within nature.
Water is an important part of my paintings. A broad brushstroke holding clear water forms riverbeds, streams, and canyons on paper. It’s invisible yet palpable. Then I add the paint. Vibrant color spills out into the clear water, flowing like an ocean. It’s like the blood in our bodies spidering out like veins and highways.
My art asks this: What is this vast place, and why are we here? I welcome the viewer into this mystery.
